Gabriel Garcia Marquez.jpg Say it isn’t so! Nobel Prize winning Latino author Gabriel Garcia Marquez didn’t write one line in 2005 and he’s ok with it. According to an interview that appeared in Sunday’s Barcelona-based daily La Vanguardia the author , whose latest book is Memorias de mis Putas Tristes, didn’t sound optimistic about breaking through this bout of writer’s block. He said:

I haven’t sat before a computer. And besides, I have no prospect or prospects to do it.

ricky-martin-beach1.jpgUrban legend or gay love story? Univision.com is really going out on a limb today. They are insinuating in a headline (“Un Rickísimo descanso
Ricky Martín vacaciona con un chico”
) that Ricky Martin may be — gasp — gay! The site is featuring some rather old photos that have been floating around the internet for the past couple of weeks in which Ricky seems to be having a ball with another (very hot) man.

¡Mal pensados!

VivirLatino is proud to announce that we are now officially a news source on Google News! Now, when you are browsing Google News for Latino-related news stories, you’ll find VL headlines right alongside those of “big guy” media.

vl-googlenews.gif

We’re hoping that this exposure on such a highly-trafficked news site will give added exposure to the Latino community and in the process give others who may be unfamiliar with issues affecting the community access to information and perspectives that may not be represented in traditional media. Increasing VL’s presence on the web will also be highly beneficial to the sponsors that make this site possible. Thanks to them and to the readers who have made the first few months of VivirLatino a success.

h_4_ill_676197_usa-mexico-border-31.jpgMexico’s looking to shine up its image in the eyes of the U.S. and it’s going to do it through the age-old craft of Public Relations:

Fed up with the drumbeat of news stories about drug wars, police corruption, border mayhem and illegal immigration, the government of Mexico has followed a time-honored course for anyone seeking an image makeover: It’s hired a PR firm.

Rob Allyn, a prominent Dallas public-relations craftsman who helped shape Mexican President Vicente Fox’s stunning election victory in 2000, now shoulders the burden of pushing aside a largely negative U.S. perception of Mexico as a land of drug lords and economic hardship.

villaraigosa.jpg It took President Bush all of about 8 minutes to mention 9-11, weapons of mass destruction, and Bin Laden, making the war on terrorism and the war in Iraq central themes in last night’s State of the Union Address. The speech, which lasted a little under an hour, had a minute or two about what’s on the mind of most Latinos, immigration. Bush said he understood that immigrants play an important role in the economy of the United States but stood firm in promoting his visiting worker program and offering no amnesty to undocumented immigrants.

Perhaps the biggest difference in this year’s State of the Union Address was that there were two official Democratic reactions. One came in English from Tom Kaine, the Governor of Virginia and one in Spanish from Antonio Villaraigosa, the mayor of Los Angeles.
