bling_web.jpgYou know fashion’s gone mainstream when not only is it in Macy’s but they’ve put it on display museum-style, exploring and analyzing its history. In Columbus, Ohio, no less. Such is the case of urban fashion and “bling”, which is the focus of a new exhibit called “Bling: Sampling Hip-Hop Fashion and the Urban Aesthetic”:

The exhibit, which incorporates fashion displays, performances, movies and lectures, pays homage to the birth of hip-hop fashion.

Hip-hop fashion has invaded mainstream style as well as high-end haute couture. “Bling” represents that growth and the power this simple movement from New York has had.

BBCIF_image.jpgThe Wall Street Journal has an interesting piece today about a supposed trend in the working world — blacks are being passed over for positions as employers show favoritism towards Latino candidates:

This kind of case marks a shift from years past, when blacks were likely to seek legal action against employers who showed preferential treatment toward whites. The cases highlight mounting tension between Hispanics and blacks as they compete for resources and job opportunities.

Recently, the federal agency announced it also secured a $180,000 settlement from Zenith National Insurance Corp., a national workers-compensation specialist, to be divided among 10 blacks who applied for a mailroom job at its headquarters in Woodland Hills, Calif. The job was offered to a Latino man with no mailroom experience, according to the EEOC.

Los feos de la farándula

020115vm_alex_lora_3.jpgUnivision.com was pretty much right on target with their latest feature covering “Feos pero talentosos”. I mean, I’m not sure about the “talentosos” part on all these guys, but some of them sure are FEOS: among them are JLo’s man Marc Anthony, Alex Lora of El Tri and Lupe Esparza of Bronco.

Nothing wrong with a little ugliness. As the article points out, “Existe una frase muy sabia que se lee así: los hombres deben tener las tres “F”, de Feo, Fuerte y Formal.”

Check out a slideshow of the ugliest Latino stars here.

300 millionth American will be Latino

latino-baby.jpgThere’s lots of buzz today in the press about who will be the 300 millionth American to be born. There also seem to be a marked interest among international press in that this child will probably be born to Latino parents, some time in October.

The UK’s Sunday Herald says:

This coming October, America’s population will reach 300 million. The symbolic 300 millionth will probably be a Mexican-American baby in Los Angeles with bilingual siblings and parents who speak Spanish at home.

The prediction of a landmark “Chicano” birth may not be exact, given the law of probability, but it’s the new American idiom – Latino, urban and multi-cultural – says Bill Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institute, a think tank in Washington DC. “The new baby is symbolic of America’s 21st century,” he says.

Eva.jpg Desperate Housewife isn’t so desperate anymore, at least nor for an orgasm. According to the Texican star, her sex life was lacking until she had a Brazilian bikini wax. I don’t know what Ms. Longoria was doing before her hair removal miracle but if she needed that to get her groove on in bed, bueno, more power to her.

workingmami.jpg I loved the Spanish siesta, the traditional long lunch/afternoon nap time. Of course I was a teenager when in Spain and I was probably sleeping off a late night party and eating to soothe a hangover. In Chile , I equally enjoyed the long lunch siesta tradition kept from the Spanish motherland. But again, I was a childless college student at the time. One article asks if the siesta tradition is adding more work to Spain’s working mothers. Working mothers end up laboring not only at their jobs during the day but in their homes with housework and the children after work hours in what is known as the “second shift”. Spain’s government is trying to ease that burden by legally establishing a standard workday of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and finishing on Friday at 2:30 p.m. Extra hours can be worked, but the law says it’s a right for public employees to finish their workday before 6 p.m.

Mi muñeca es como yo

dollslikeme2.jpgIn Toyland, before there was just blonde, “perfect” Barbie. In the 70s, black dolls became more and more common. Lately, there are also quite a few Latino dolls to be had. Now, a new online store plans to make dolls of all ethnicities available to children, as well bi-racial and multi-racial dolls. This in response to the notable lack of variety in toys for children of color:

The poll of 2,230 African American parents, 470 Latino parents, and 20 Asian parents found that 82% of the African American parents, 74% of the Latino parents, and 50% of the Asian parents felt It is important for children of color to have dolls that look like them. Of those parents, an overwhelming 94% of the African American parents and 90% of the Latino parents agreed that the selection of dolls and puppets of color in local super and toy stores was, as one parent put it, abysmal.

The line of dolls (some “anatomically correct” — none of that weird blank space between the legs), called “Dolls like Me” start at $11.95 and can be ordered online at dollslikeme.com.

Had these existed when I was a kid I may have turned out a little less messed up.
