Jennifer Lopez was seen dressed in white in the Iglesia de San Francisco de Asís in Old San Juan yesterday afternoon with her husband singer Marc Anthony. They were getting married again but not for real. They were filming a scene for the movie “El Cantante” about the late great sonero, Hector Lavoe. Marc Anthony plays the troubled singer and Jenny from the block plays his partner Nilda “Puchi” Román. “El Cantante” is one of two movies being made about Lavoe. The family of Lavoe is not supporting the Marc Anthony and J. Lo. version. The family instead is throwing their support behind a version starring Raúl Carbonell who also played Lavoe in a theatrical production in NYC.

There is much critical focus on Bolivia as it has just inaugurated its first indigenous presidente. Evo Morales is indeed the first Aymara to run the country that is about 80 percent indigenous. He also represents the industry that employs and feeds that majority, the coca industry. But the election of Evo is more that just about democracy at work, more than just about the majority who have been treated as minority in terms of capital and power taking their place. The election of Evo Morales combined with the presidency of Hugo Chavez in Venezuela and the election of Michelle Bachelet in Chile point to a growing move to the left in Latin America. But just because Evo Morales is one of the people doesn’t mean he has it easy, according to AlterNet:
Bolivia’s “right-wing movements, particularly those concentrated in Santa Cruz, Bolivia’s wealthiest province, where the energy and agricultural export businesses are based, may well encourage” a civil conflict with the Morales government if he doesn’t toe the line…His hands tied by corporate-designed “free-trade” deals and a load of debt, Evo Morales is caught between a rock and a very hard place.

For those of you hoping that reggaeton was just as passing thing, I have news for you. It ain’t gonna happen. The genre just keeps growing and Daddy Yankee remains the king of the reggaeton reign. More than 500,000 thousand copies of his album “Barrio Fino en Directo” have been sold placing Daddy Yankee for 4 straight weeks at the top of the Billboard Sales Charts. His single “Rompe” has been at the top of the Hot Latin Songs chart for over nine weeks. Daddy Yankee is also numero uno on the Latin Tropical Airplay chart and on the Top Latin Rhythm chart. And if crossing over is any indication of success one only needs to tune to MTV where “Rompe” is at # 5 on TRL. The only thing Daddy Yankee is rompiendo is sales records.

The fabulous children’s show on PBS, Plaza Sesamo (the Spanish-language version of Sesame Street) just announced its plans for a new season, and it looks pretty cool:
Plaza’s unique Muppet characters, appear in telenovela parodies to positively demonstrate emotions and help children understand them. Also, watch for special celebrity guest appearances from Jorge Campos, Edith Gonzalez, Sebastian Gonzalez “Chamagol,” Andrea Legarreta, Adal Ramones, and Marco Antonio Regil, as they share adventures with the residents of the Plaza and their viewers.
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) released a study last week restating what has been said before, that Latinos continue to fall behind in terms of access to health care. While health care disparities have lessened for other people of color compared to whites, treatments for diabetes, mental illness and tuberculosis, as well as dental and preventative care, were just some of the areas in which disparities for Latinos were increasing. According to the National Center for Policy Analysis:
Officials say they cannot identify the reasons for the gaps in health care for Latinos. Carolyn Clancy, director of AHRQ, says that a language barrier might contribute to the disparities, adding that she did not know the extent to which illegal immigration plays a role.
As a Latina I can say that language, immigration status, as well as disparities in income all play a role as to why nuestra gente still are not getting the health care they need and deserve.

If your a mujer you may want to make sure that Eve Longoria is on your guest list because apparently she gives some rocking regalos. The New York Post’s Page Six column reported earlier this week that the desperate housewife likes to give sex toys as gifts. Eva dice:
I have, like, 50 boxes of them and I give them away to everybody.
I just have one question. Will she give some to Latina bloggers who write about her?

So much for the press being tolerant and accepting of celebs peeing on others. Ricky Martin really thought that he would find understanding in the media when he confessed to Blender magazine that he enjoys engaging in “one night stands, porn, golden showers”, as reported by Mala earlier this month. To Ricky’s surprise the press did what they were supposed to do: EAT. IT. UP. Now he’s pee-pee-pissed:
Ricky Martin has struck back at critics who have attacked his ability to run his humanitarian foundation because of controversial statements the pop star made about his sex life in Blender magazine. In a letter in Spanish posted on Univision.com, Ricky said, “At the time I granted the interview never did it cross my mind that my comments would spark this absurd and sensationalist public discussion. I cannot avoid speculation about my career and life, but I cannot allow those for whom my foundation works to be affected because I am a public figure.”

Antonio Villaraigosa, the mayor of L.A., will respond to President Bush’s state of the Union address on the part of his party, the Democrats, in Spanish:
Villaraigosa has been seen as a rising Democratic star since his election in May as the first Hispanic in 133 years to lead Los Angeles, the country’s second-largest city. He will deliver his remarks from his Los Angeles office, said Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
“Mayor Villaraigosa is working hard to increase economic opportunity and provide affordable and quality education for the people of Los Angeles,” Reid and Pelosi said in a joint statement Wednesday. “As the first Latino mayor of Los Angeles in more than a century, we are proud to have his diverse voice within the party.”
