Chris Matthews: And they thought he was a Liberal

7:43 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Media|Politics|TV · 4 Comments

matthewsduct.jpgConservatives call him liberal, and liberals are calling him a republican — MSNBC’s Chris Matthews is igniting conversation all over the internet with comments he made in an interview with L.A. mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. It seems Chris has gotten inside the minds of Latino immigrants, and was schooling Villaraigosa — a Mexican American — on Mexicans. Neat.

Media Matters’ Summary:

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews asserted that Spanish-speaking immigrants “sound like … natural Republicans to me.” Matthews also claimed that “everybody knows” that Puerto Rican, Cuban and Mexican immigrants “don’t want a big social democracy” and that “[t]hey want free enterprise and entrepreneurialism,” citing examples of opening a flower shop or “a bodega.”

Another Boda for J. Lo. and Marc Anthony?

1:22 pm By Maegan La Mala · Celebrities|Movies|Music|Puerto Rico · Comments Off

27 Jan 2006

jlomarc.jpg Jennifer Lopez was seen dressed in white in the Iglesia de San Francisco de Asís in Old San Juan yesterday afternoon with her husband singer Marc Anthony. They were getting married again but not for real. They were filming a scene for the movie “El Cantante” about the late great sonero, Hector Lavoe. Marc Anthony plays the troubled singer and Jenny from the block plays his partner Nilda “Puchi” Román. “El Cantante” is one of two movies being made about Lavoe. The family of Lavoe is not supporting the Marc Anthony and J. Lo. version. The family instead is throwing their support behind a version starring Raúl Carbonell who also played Lavoe in a theatrical production in NYC.

evo.jpg There is much critical focus on Bolivia as it has just inaugurated its first indigenous presidente. Evo Morales is indeed the first Aymara to run the country that is about 80 percent indigenous. He also represents the industry that employs and feeds that majority, the coca industry. But the election of Evo is more that just about democracy at work, more than just about the majority who have been treated as minority in terms of capital and power taking their place. The election of Evo Morales combined with the presidency of Hugo Chavez in Venezuela and the election of Michelle Bachelet in Chile point to a growing move to the left in Latin America. But just because Evo Morales is one of the people doesn’t mean he has it easy, according to AlterNet:

Bolivia’s “right-wing movements, particularly those concentrated in Santa Cruz, Bolivia’s wealthiest province, where the energy and agricultural export businesses are based, may well encourage” a civil conflict with the Morales government if he doesn’t toe the line…His hands tied by corporate-designed “free-trade” deals and a load of debt, Evo Morales is caught between a rock and a very hard place.
