I am excited about watching the Golden Globes tonight. I don’t know how it happened, but I went from totally hating awards shows to becoming obsessed with them when I hit 26 years of age. I think this might be an indication of a sharp decline in my social life. Or something.
Anyway, I was curious to know if there were any Latino nominees on the list this year, so I went to the web site. The first name on the list, Maria Bello, seemed promising. After checking the IMDB I find that the actress is actually Polish-Italian.
A scan of the rest of the list gives us a Joaquin (as in Phoenix), who may or not be a “real” Latino, but he was born in Puerto Rico, speaks fluent Spanish and probably represents a lot better than Eva Longoria, who while I had no particular fondness for before, has severely disappointed with her recent comments.
He’s Brazilian and people with more time on their hands than I have can go ahead and hash out whether or not being Brazilian constitutes being “Latino” as well.
Then there’s Fernando Meirilles, the director of “The Constant Gardener”. He’s Brazilian and people with more time on their hands than I have can go ahead and hash out whether or not being Brazilian constitutes being “Latino” as well.
Turns out that Eva Longoria is the only “real Latino” on the list. So much for representation.
