The University of California is reacting to data which points to a rise in the rate of HIV infection among Mexican migrant workers through much needed outreach programs and information. UC is teaming up with the Mexican government in an attempt to slow the spread of HIV among Mexican workers:
New efforts to test and treat Mexican migrant workers for HIV are in development throughout California, along with education methods and materials, as part of a new study showing rising rates of the virus among the population.
On Jan. 2, National Public Radio reported on a study that was released to the public in June 2005, with research data showing that the rates of Mexican migrant workers who have obtained HIV during their time working in the United States have increased since 2001.

Sporting bleached blonde braids, Rican Merenguero Elvis Crespo took a paternity test in Puerto Rico yesterday to prove (or not) that he is the baby daddy of a little girl. According to Al Rojo Vivo, Crespo didn’t acknowledge the girl when he went to take the paternity test, although the little girl did recognize him as “papi”. Sheila Ramos, the mother of the nena, said that she was not opposed to letting her daughter have a relationship with Elvis Crespo once the test results were finalized. Elvis Crespo has three other children, all boys, two which were the results of extra-marital affairs.

Joan Manuel Serrat, a pop icon from Barcelona with a huge following in Mexico, has announced his participation in a concert in support of the fight against the brutal murders of women in the Mexican border town of Ciudad Juarez:
Conceived to last nearly 10 hours, the concert in homage to the victims and a protest against discrimination of women will take place in Mexico City and count on performances of Benny Ibarra, Elefante, Tres de Copas, Pablo Abraira, Fabgoria and Cristina del Valle, among others.
According to La Jornada daily, presidential candidates will also attend the spectacle, an attempt by the coordinators to get them to commit to an integral law against discrimination of women.
Joan Manuel Serrat will tour seven Mexican cities from January 20 to February 18, including two presentations for street children as closing performances.

While 44% of Latinos may have voted for Bush in the last presidential election, Republican’s shouldn’t take their support for granted. According to a survey taken last week by the Latino Coalition :
most Latinos thought Democrats do a better job at creating more jobs and improving the economy, improving education, providing more affordable health care, staying in touch with the Hispanic community, and, notably, representing their views on immigration.
It is interesting to note however, that most of the Latinos interviewed identified themselves as being Mexican or of Mexican ancestry. It is important to remember that Latinos do not vote as a monolithic bloc because Latinos encompass many nationalities, races, and classes.
