gael_garcia_bernal.jpg Gael Garcia Bernal is much more than a pretty face and a talented actor, he is using his fame to speak out about causes that he cares about and feels strongly about. Today in Hong Kong, Garcia Bernal joined on a fair trade campaign run by the humanitarian aid organization Oxfam. Specifically the 27 year old actor spoke about the negative impact genetically modified corn exported from the U.S. under NAFTA was having on the agricultural economies of countries like his own native Mexico.

Tortillas

4:12 pm By Maegan La Mala · Culture|Food · Comments Off

14 Dec 2005

tortillas.jpgI love to see when Latino culture makes itself present in American society. I know food isn’t the most important aspect of culture but it is the most delicious. First it was salsa outselling ketchup, and now it’s the use of the tortilla. The tortilla for some of us anyways, is something that we eat on a daily basis. Nowadays the tortilla can be found across all cultures here in the states.

The tortilla, which has been a staple in Mexican homes for thousands of years, is swimming in the mainstream now. Sales were estimated to be more than $5.3 billion in 2004, up 20 percent from 2002. “The fastest growth part is the non-Hispanic market,” said Rudy Guerra Jr., president of Dallas-based Rudy’s Tortillas and a third-generation tortilla maker.
“It’s not just a Hispanic food now.”

Air Pollution Most Likely to Affect Latinos in Michigan

3:44 pm By Maegan La Mala · Michigan · Comments Off

14 Dec 2005

pollution.jpg Although Latinos represent less than 4 percent of the population of the state of Michigan, Latinos are three times more likely to live in areas that have high levels of air pollution.

In general minorities and impoverished families are more likely to breathe unhealthy air. It’s unfortunate that those on the bottom rung of the economic ladder always seem to face the most obstacles in trying to “make it.”

engineering.jpgIn order to remain competitive in the world economy the U.S. Department of Labor states that 1.5 million technology professionals will be needed here in the U.S. Furthermore, IBM states that in this decade “…one out of four jobs will be in information technology.” Strangely enough there has been a decline in technology related course enrollment. Of all students graduating from computer science programs in the U.S., Latinos represent 3.9 percent.

Friday, IBM, Florida International University and the University of Miami are to launch a program to encourage young people, especially Hispanics, to consider careers in engineering and information technology.
Called “LA Grid,” the initiative is to work to increase number of Hispanic students entering the technology industry by pairing them with IBM mentors and providing opportunities to work on research and development projects with Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM.
“Currently, there is a great opportunity for Hispanics in the technology industry,” IBM said.

Delaware State Police Need Latinos

3:58 pm By Maegan La Mala · Careers · Comments Off

13 Dec 2005

copbillboard.jpgThe Delaware state police is in search of Latinos to join the force. The agency currently has 15 Latino state troopers out of a force of 657.

“We have not let up on our recruitment of all demographics, but we have intensified our efforts to recruit qualified Hispanic applicants,” state police spokesman Lt. Joseph Aviola said.
State troopers are visiting career fairs at colleges and military bases, attending community events and using radio, newspapers and flyers, as well as the state police Web site, trying to attract Latinos to a career in law enforcement.

I find it commendable that the Delaware state police is trying hard to diversify its force, especially with the growing Latino population of the state.

Hipsters Love Luny Tunes and Reggaeton

8:34 am By Maegan La Mala · Magazines|Music · Comments Off

13 Dec 2005

reggaeton.jpg The end of the year brings plenty of “best of” lists. The Hipster/Yuppie magazine New York Magazine came out with its best of list yesterday and it turns out hipsters love reggaeton. They especially love Luny Tunes who was chosen as the magazines number #3 Best Producer and they heart Daddy Yankee’s Gasolina that was chosen as one of the year’s best Pop Micro-Trends. I predict reggaeton nights to start at Williamsburg bars and lounges.

Tom_Tancredo.jpgRacist congressman Tom Tancredo of Colorado wants to change the U.S. Birthright Citizenship policy so that the children born of immigrants will not attain U.S. citizenship.

A group of 92 lawmakers in the House will attempt next week to force a vote on legislation that would revoke the principle of “birthright citizenship,” part of a broader effort to discourage illegal immigration.

Because of the length of time involved, some immigration experts say that birthright citizenship is not a major incentive for the vast majority of illegal entrants.

Not sure why Tancredo is such a xenophobe, especially when he is the son of Italian immigrants. I always wonder how crazy hypocrites like Tancredo get elected to public office.

“There is no support for the concept in the Senate,” said Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.). “There are certain things that we have done as a nation for a long time that I don’t think we’re going to change. Rolling back the clock is not going to solve the problem of immigration.”

New Study Looks at Disparity in Treatment of Depression in Latinos

1:20 pm By Maegan La Mala · Health · Comments Off

12 Dec 2005

smalldepression.jpg With the media and community at large discussing the fact that Federal Marshall shooting victim Rigoberto Alpizar may have been suffering from Bipolar Disorder , a recent study looking at how Depression is treated in Latinos is especially timely. The study released this month by the American Psychiatric Association reveals that Latinos were less likely than whites to receive care for depression and when they received care, the care was below the minimum guidelines. According to the study this could not be explained by differences in age , educational levels or employment status or even if those that participated in the study were being seen in clinics that served mostly Latinos or not. The recent study points that patient and/or provider factors could be behind the differences in treatment.

Latinos need to get over the stigma that mental illness has and be honest about their mental health so that they can receive appropriate treatment and providers need to make sure that they are providing culturally competent and equal care to their Latino patients.
