Frame2.jpgI never thought of my hometown as a “haven” for the undocumented (much less its suburb Katy, or Austin), but apparently the U.S. government thinks so, and is pressuring Houston officials to change this:

City Councilman Mark Ellis is trying to force a vote on a plan directing police to enforce immigration law and requiring proof of citizenship for people receiving social services. The local effort coincides with a push by President George W. Bush and bills in Congress to crack down on illegal immigration.

“The federal government, they’re not going to be able to get their arms around this issue alone,” Ellis said in a telephone interview. “They’re going to have to have assistance from the local government and state government.”

La Voz de Kentucky

Andres Cruz co-owns and operates La Voz de Kentucky, a free English/Spanish bilingual newspaper that publishes every two weeks from an office in the new Community Ventures building on Midland Avenue. The newspaper has been in publication since 2001, but Cruz and Juan Jose Galicia will celebrate three years of owner-operation in January.

As Latinos many times we complain that there is not enough coverage on issues that affect us, or we are stereotyped by the media and presented in an unfavorable light. What Mr. Cruz is doing is a step in the right direction for the Latino community throughout the country. Why not have our own media outlets at the local level. What better way to inform Latinos on issues that are of interest, than with a newspaper such as La Voz de Kentucky.

“We are always on the side of the people. We cannot make mistakes, because people trust us,” said Galicia about the responsibility he and Cruz feel about correctly informing their readers.
La Voz soon plans to distribute a radio version of the newspaper to area stations, and to start a Web site with the same content as the print version.

Nuyorker: a new blog en español

nuyorker.jpgMy friend Oso tipped me to Nuyorker, a new blog that just launched that’s all about NYC, in Spanish. I must say it immediately got my attention because the first post I read was about rapper 50 Cent’s entrepreneurial endeavors — apparently he is promoting his own line of vibrators:

El hip hopero y actor de cine 50 cent va a sacar una linea de “sex toys”. El articulo estrella es una version de 50 cent motorizado con un vibrador igualito a su miembro viril, pero azul (salvo que 50 lo tenga realmente azul) “para que todas las chicas puedan experienciar lo que es tener sexo con 50″.

Nashville to Ban Taco Trucks

taco_truck.jpgThis is a follow-up to last month’s “Cracking down on taco trucks.”

The city of Nashville is currently proposing a ban on all taco trucks due to health concerns. The taco trucks that many of us frequent will only be allowed for special events, and no longer can operate on a daily basis.

City councilman Tommy Bradley, states that the proposed ban is motivated by health concerns and that it’s not meant to target Latinos. Interestingly, Latinos are the ones that are going to be affected since they’re the ones that own the majority of the trucks in the city.

It is very wrong that the city of Nashville would do this to us, especially since taco trucks are the best source for great tacos. Where do you want us to go? Taco Bell? Yeah right.

Latinos work through the system, start their own businesses and then something like this happens. Why doesn’t the Nashville department of Health actually do their job and inspect the trucks to assure the public that they are safe instead of simply banning them?

freddy.jpg It’s been over a month since the New York City Mayoral election and I have one message for losing Democrat Freddy Ferrer and his camp: let it go. Roberto Ramirez, advisor to the once Bronx Borough President, said that a Sunday Times Magazine picture that showed Freddy wearing a guayabera and Mayor Michael Bloomberg wearing a suit, made Freddy look like a stereotype. According to a Village Voice article

A Ferrer aide explained that the candidate had gone to the Times photo shoot in a suit and changed into the guayabera afterward because he was heading to a parade. The photographer asked him for quick shots as he was leaving.
