Pew: Unemployment not causing immigration

15.jpgContrary to the old racist wives tale of “They can’t find a job in their country so they come here to take ours”, the Pew Hispanic Center has released a report which points to factors other than unemployment as catalysts for immigration northward:

The vast majority of undocumented migrants from Mexico were gainfully employed before they left for the United States, according to a Pew Hispanic Center report released today. The report suggests that failure to find work at home does not seem to be the primary reason that the estimated 6.3 million undocumented migrants from Mexico have
come to the U.S.

086-MuseoDelBarrio.jpgEl Museo del Barrio, the leading NYC institution on Latino and Latin American culture broke ground yesterday on a $14 million expansion that includes adding a sleek new glass entryway and lobby to the building and a Latin café. The entire project is expected to be finished by fall 2007.

“I think it’s a great honor. It means a lot not only to be the first Latino, but just to be elected in general. The times are changing. Plus, with the student population being (72) percent Latino, I think having one or two Latino representatives on the board was necessary.”

Finally, Latinos have been elected to the Whittier School Board. It’s good to see that Latinos are taking positions of power within their communities. It’s sad though to see that it has taken so long, but at least we have our collective foot in the door.

The 1990 U.S. Census showed that 40 percent of Whittier residents were Hispanics. By 2000, Whittier’s Latino population jumped to 56 percent.

“I’m lovin’ it”…What?

mcdonalds.jpgI hardly watch any television channels besides ESPN and Comedy Network but the other day I happened to catch a commercial on Univision that just goes to show the overcommercialization of everything. It started off as your typical McDonalds commercial with their annoying catch phrase “i’m lovin’ it” then it went into a dream sequence with Mexica (Aztec) warriors playing Tlachtli, a game similar to today’s basketball.

Now, what do the Mexica or Aztecs, whatever your preference is, have to do with McDonalds? Last time I checked there were no McDonalds back in those days. No matter how much Wal-mart tries to convince itself that its alright to build one of their superstores next to Teotihuacán it is NOT. No matter how much McDonalds tries to sell its burgers to Latinos it is NOT ok for them use our cultural heritage as a vehicle to make them richer and make us fatter.

Next thing you know the Virgencita de Guadalupe, the dearest of symbols to many Latinos will end up in a McDonalds commercial.

jlo(1).jpgShe’s not a vieja yet, though she’ll be playing one in her new movie, El Cantante, which features J-Lo alongside her longtime husband, Marc Anthony. From a snarky British article:

With her face lined with wrinkles, gaudy make-up and unkempt hair, this is Jennifer Lopez as you have never seen her before.

The singer and actress, who normally has flawless skin, was made up to look much older than her 36 years as she shot her latest film El Cantante in New York with husband Marc Antony.

Luny Tunes Gets Play in New York Times

reggaeton.jpg You know you’ve officially crossed over when you’re in the Sunday New York Times. Ladies and gentlemen, reggaetón has crossed over. This past Sunday the New York Times dedicated an article to the reggaetón production team Luny Tunes and their success. And just in case anyone is really concerned about the integrity of the genre that brought us Gasolina, The Times quotes Luny Tunes as saying:

“Jessica Simpson’s father wants to work with us, too”…and that they are negotiating with Ms. [Jennifer] Lopez’s film company to produce the soundtrack for a film he says is “a sort of reggaetón 8 Mile.”
