Carlson.jpgAs a follow-up to Rebecca’s post on Florida state senator Leslie Miller’s proposal to teach children Spanish in school from grades K-2, I wanted to comment on an exchange I witnessed between Senator Miller and (shiver) Tucker Carlson on the latter’s cable television show which left me despising Carlson even more. Not just because he’s a Republican but because he came off as a childish idiot. In response to Miller’s question of why we shouldn’t start teaching kids Spanish early and let them decide later if they want to continue:

CARLSON: Well, I’ll tell you why. Look, it sounds like you’re open to voluntary solution, which is certainly better than the compulsory one. But there are a lot of things you’d like your kids to know. You know, you’d love to learn them—how to learn to play the xylophone, or the accordion, or speak Esperanto or, you know, learn a lot about Finland.

He’s comparing learning Spanish, regarded by most as second most important language in the world to Esperanto and the xylophone. (He also said “learn them”. Jeez.)

Transgender Latinas Abused by Police

trans.jpg It probably is no surprise that Latinos are targeted and profiled by the police, often making our community the victims of police abuse and brutality. With just a few days before November 20th, Transgender Remembrance Day, a day honoring those who have been killed as a result of prejudice, it’s also a good time to take note at how pervasive police abuse against our transgender brothers and sisters really is.

Many people think of New York City’s Greenwich Village as liberal and open minded, yet it was in broad daylight in the Village earlier this year that 20-year-old Maria Lopez was sexually harassed and arrested for loitering by the New York City Police Department while she waited for a bus.

JLo, the reality show producer

2:17 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Entertainment|TV · Comments Off

17 Nov 2005

Pt People JLo Full.jpgShe’s been a dancer, an actress and a singer. Now Jenny from the Block is jumping on the reality show bandwagon (and retracing her steps as a fledgling young dancer) to produce a new series which chronicles the struggle for fame for some L.A. area talents:

La serie de televisión aún no tiene título y se centrará en las vidas de diferentes bailarines de Los Angeles (EEUU) que quieren ser famosos.

La trama recuerda los comienzos de López cuando se dio a conocer en el mundo del espectáculo como una de las bailarinas “Fly Girls” de la serie de variedades “In Living Color”, que se emitió en la década de 1990.

Rumor has it that JLo will act as executive producer and that the show will be co-produced by her company, Nuyorican Productions and MTV.

Latinos Asking Freddy : Que Paso?

8:36 am By Maegan La Mala · New York City|Politics · Comments Off

17 Nov 2005

ferrer.jpg The mayoral race may be over in New York City, with billionaire Mayor Michael Bloomberg winning over Rican Freddy Ferrer by 20 percent, but Latinos and other Democrats are still talking with the next election in mind and wondering que paso? The heavily Latino borough of the Bronx, which Freddy once ran as Borough President, was the only section of the city that Ferrer won.

Some blame the former candidate Ferrer, saying he didn’t really reach out to the community, didn’t play up his “Latinidad”, and most importantly didn’t really represent the values of the grassroots community. Some actually blame the community, saying that Latinos and Democrats overall gave Freddy lukewarm support at best. The answer probably is somewhere in between.

There hasn’t been a person of color in NYC’s City Hall since David Dinkins and Latino names like current Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion are being tossed around for the next election, four full years away.

What Latinos and all people of color and working class people need to decide is what values people want running this diverse city, not what color he is or what accent his last name has.
