UCLA and UC San Diego released the findings of a study exploring alcohol use in Latina expectant mothers. Excerpt:

“Traditionally held cultural values that discourage women from drinking alcohol may change when women, such as Latinas, emigrate to the U.S.,” said Christina D. Chambers, assistant professor of pediatrics and family and preventive medicine at the University of California, San Diego and corresponding author for the study. “Furthermore, due to cultural, educational, or language barriers, low-income Latinas may be less likely to admit to alcohol use and/or have less accurate awareness of the risks of drinking during pregnancy.”

Must be all that pirouetting he does. He apparently had a great fall during a concert in Houston. Fans were hysterical:

A Latin music superstar recovered in a hospital Monday after falling off a stage at the Toyota Center during his concert, KPRC Local 2 reported Sunday.

Juan Gabriel’s concert had just begun when he tripped on some cables and fell six feet during his first song.

Gabriel’s fans were stunned by what happened, and prayed as they saw paramedics take him away.

“Everyone was crying. It was really sad and we just hope that he’s OK. We were like which hospital … where do we go see him at? It feels like he’s our family,” one fan told KPRC Local 2.

Doctors said Gabriel suffered a concussion and broken wrist.

The concert is expected to be rescheduled.

spanicsmall.jpg The National Alliance for Hispanic Health (NIHH) knows that Latinas regardless of language watch novelas. That is why they have brought novela estrella Gabriela Spanic on board as their spokesmujer for their “Mejorando Tu Vida” campaign.

The campaign features an exercise video, led by la Spanic herself, and isn’t just about losing weight, according to a press release sent out by the NIHH. The videos and website also promote healthy eating, exercise, and other wellness habits. The aim is to show Latinas, who are labeled as high risk for obesity and diabetes, that a healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to be a chore and can be easily integrated into daily routines

The videos can be ordered online or by telephone.
