Latin Grammys fail to impress (me)

ap_Alejandro_Sanz_04nov05_210.jpgIt’s just my own personal opinion, but in spite of the fact that there was a greater sense of sponteneity and a more laid-back atmosphere this year (presenters that struggled with English could finally relax and deliver their lines in Spanish), I had higher hopes for this year’s entrega.

First of all, I don’t know who decided it was a good idea to put plasticman Eduardo Santamarina up there as a host. He’s one of the worst actors in Mexico (and that says a lot, given that he’s a telenovela actor) and turned out to be an even worse presenter. That same person must have thought that Rebecca de Alba was a good pick. Yes, she’s beautiful, but she was BORING. Her tone was as if she was presenting the Nobel Peace Prize or something.

Yes, she’s beautiful, but she was BORING. Her tone was as if she was presenting the Nobel Peace Prize or something.

But I won’t say anything about her hair. Did I mention that Eduardo Santamarina is a robot?

A few specific moments really failed to impress me. I was all excited when they announced that Grupo Intocable was going to play with Juanes in a sort of Tejano-Vallenato duel on the accordeon. That didn’t happen. Intocable came out and played one of their songs on one stage, finished, then Juanes came out on another stage and played his. Why?

Again, just my own gustos, but why so much Reggaeton? I know it’s fashionable now but GOD. And Daddy Yankee didn’t even show up to collect his Grammy.

I don’t know who is buying Laura Pausini’s records. Why is she always winning when their are far superior pop singers out there? She said herself: “I don’t know what to say because I thought Bebe was going to win to tell you the truth.” ME TOO!

Highlights of the night for me were: Bebe (she decided to curse when picking up her award and got bleeped out — that kind of censorship doesn’t exist in Spain) and her fresh performance of her hit “Malo”, Julieta Venegas’ norteño performance with Los Tigres and the finale.

For the last act, Argentino Diego Torres (sporting platinum blond hair) began singing his ultra cursi hit “Color Esperanza” with Brazilian Alexandre Pires (HOT). Eduardo (Android host) had mentioned that three big performers would take the stage at the end, and as they sung the anticipation was building…who could it be?

At all Latino award shows, it seems when la cosa falta sabor they bring out Olga Tañon. This year’s latin Grammys were no exception. Olga took the stage and things blew up. It was actually really beautiful to see three so different faces of Latino music together on stage rocking the crowd. A fine finale for a mediocre edition of the awards.

I was reading but listening to the TV and then I hear that los tigres and julieta venegas are going to play together..I was like I gotta check this out. It was a cool duet but it was missing something..not sure, it was as though it was too forced.
I think the problem with the Latin Grammys is that it targets its U.S. audience (the music that we latinos in the U.S. listen to) and consequently leaves out many many awesome artists that are more deserving. I dunno just some thoughts.

It’s good that it was in Spanish this year. Unless you’re Ivan Lins. Poor guy got rushed off the stage his Spanish was so bad. And Jose Jose is not lookin’ healthy.

Yeah, they totally left Brazilians out of the mix. Every time they´d come back from a commercial, they´d be like “before we started broadcasting, some Brazilians got these awards…” Not OK, in my opinion. And yeah, José José was looking tore up.
