Katrina cleanup brings work and racism

15:00 H | Topics: Immigration - Mexico - Politics

00059F6C-0427-1318-A9AA0C01AC1BF814.jpgThroughout the Katrina ordeal, America's eyes were opened to two ugly realities of our country's Gulf Coast region: poverty and racism. We've come to know that in many cases, these two things go hand-in-hand. Community leaders were vocal about the link between the goverment's slow response and the fact that the affected area was largely populated by poor black people.

Now Katrina is over a month behind us. Cleanup is moving along, slowly. New Orleans is getting back to normal, but there is still a lot to do. So much, it seems, that FEMA isn't able to find enough workers to keep up with the demands of the job.

Enter: Mexican immigrants. Hundreds of Mexican workers have arrived to New Orleans to do the job that no one else can do or wants to do. This is nothing new. Hard labor is no fun, and few us of would sign up for this kind of a job. We aren't signing up. In the meantime, Mexicans are picking up the slack, and the Mayor of New Orleans screams "invasion":

The new norm for New Orleans in terms of demographics is what concerns some city officials. Earlier this month, both Nagin and City Council President Oliver Thomas weighed in on the topic. Nagin was widely quoted as asking local business people, "How do I ensure that New Orleans is not overrun by Mexican workers?" But the mayor later sought to distance himself from that remark. His comments were focused on the question of whether Louisiana companies were getting their fair share, Nagin said.

"Overrun by Mexican workers". Words that evoke images of chaos. Words charged with racism. Ironic.

Workers, Mexican or not, will be responsible for restoring New Orleans and giving Mayor Nagin (who, incidentally, won't have to worry too much about the invasion, since he's purchased a home in Dallas) back his once non-Mexican city. But for those who'd rather not hear Spanish in the streets or see brown faces on their block, life just isn't that simple. After the reconstruction of the city is behind us, Latino workers will be in New Orleans. They will be in Mississippi and in Georgia. They will be everywhere because their labor is what is behind that glass of Chardonnay you are sipping and that faux French meal you'll be sitting down to later tonight. Like it or not, Latinos are here to stay.

I accept people here legaly, but we can't just allow legal or illegal hispanics to burden our lives with "reconquista".

"Overrun with Mexican workers". Yeah, those dangerous Mexicans are charging into the US like bats out of hell to....WORK! How dare they try to HELP OUT. This is completely ridiculous. First they hate us for coming here to pick their fruits and vegtables, now they don't want us cleaning up New Orleans? Yes, a burden indeed.

Little known fact: Mexicans and other Hispanics, particularly Hondurans, were already living in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. They were also victims of hurricane Katrina.

But the increasingly out of touch media chose to portray the victims as only black and white. Somebody tell the baby boomers who run the media that the black/white paradigm no longer applies. Mexicans and other Hispanics live in all 50 states.

And these workers are not "taking" jobs or "invading" anything. Employers are RECRUITING them and GIVING them those jobs.

There is no racial paradigm for Hispanics because they're not a race, now if you speak of specific races of hispanics (mestizo, mualato), then thats accurate.

The number of hispanics currently in that state is small, so thats why they lacked attention. Illegals and they're emoployers should both be punished. I believe in obeying laws.

well actually if you would like to get technical there is no racial paradigm for anyone because the concept of race is strictly man-made and based in power plays.

The Latino population in that state is actually not that small . The numbers look smaller than what they are because of inaccaurate counts based in part on fear of the undocumented population.

Hmmm let's all turn to our history books and see who conquered who first before we start raising alarmist flags of "reconquista". Oh my diosa the brown people are coming!!! Por favor. They have always been here.

To "Mayor" Ray Nagin, you are not only racist but ignorant too. You want to know how to make sure New Orleans is not overrun by Mexican workers? Who do you think you are? Davy Crockett?

To Oliver Thomas (President New Orleans City Council), when your grievance isn't against your Hispanic friends yet your affliction is that "you love your black friends first", then you truly never had Hispanic friends to begin with.

To Clarence Verdane, the poor black contractor who will only hire black because his preference is African American.....go ahead if you can find any.

Mr. Verdane thinks the city (Nagin & Thomas) should help bring black residents home and give them these jobs. Sorry but Mr. Nagin & Thomas are to busy being racist just like you blaming everyone from FEMA to frijoles for there incompetence as elected officials. Seems to me that neither will get the Hispanic vote next election.

Why should the city help bring the black residents back? The Hispanics crossed statelines to find jobs there and the Mexicans came from another country. You mean to tell me the blacks can't find a ride home on there own?

Yes the "population shift" is permenant. Latino workers should plan to stay. Within two months of hurricane Katrina, Hispanic and Mexican workers have already contributed to the community, economy and workforce. This fact is not because of an invasion, but because these latinos are willing to work....bottom line!

Brown is not the new black in terms of racism. Brown has always been brown meaning strong, proud and hardworking and no one (black nor white) can take that from us.

There's a easy solution. All city officials have to do is report the illegals and they will be deported.

Trickbag,

Americans workers were replaced with Mexican workers so Bush's no bid contracting buddies could get cheaper labor.

I have just read all of the information posted and I have been intrigued as well as repulsed. I am a African American-Black female actually, and I do not agree with what the mayor of NO did, nor do I condone any of the other rubbish that the companys will hire only blacks. I do agree that the Hispanic community has always been there, and that they are not here to take OUR jobs,Bush is sending OUR jobs to MEXICO for 6cents a dollar, if the Latinos are the only ones who wants to work then fine, so be it, but please lets not forget that the main reason the only race that is working is working for less than what everyone would work for. I commend the effort that this race has contributed to our society and that it shouldn't be a race issue but this is America, we thrive off of B.S like this because the media doesn't know how to report the real facts or the facts that matter. I have several Hispanic friends and feel that their racism is just as undermining as the blacks but it easier to blame someone else for taking our jobs. The truth is black people wont work for less than $7. an hour to do manual labor or the fact that we cant get that job because the company will only hire the Hispanics because the hispanic will work for $5., and that is why we are so called losing jobs to them, where we lack the togetherness, that is where they thrive, they understand what it means to struggle, and they are WILLING to work to obtain those goals and they will tell other Hispanics abou the jobs and so forth and so on.
As long as we-as Americans feel that we are better, or that we are entitled than we will forever cry RACISM.
