The roots of many Latino musical genres lie in not so savory places. Bachata was born in the bars and whorehouses of the Dominican Republic but now has mass appeal, especially among the Dominican immigrants who call cities like New York their home. Santo Domingo Blues is a full length documentary film that follows the development and growth of the genre through well known bachatero Luis Vargas. Bachata, known as “the song of bitterness” and as the guitar blues of Santo Domingo, sometimes sings about lost loves and the difficulties faced by Dominicanos here in the U.S. and back home on la isla. The film is like the music, filled with deep insight, humor, pain, and warmth rolled up into one enjoyable feature.

It’s True: Where IS All of the Coverage on the Disaster in Latin America?

I just read a great article entitled, Central American Flood, Where is the Coverage?, discussing the flooding from Hurricane Stan in Mexico & Guatemala and the lack of press attention in the US. I have to say that this is something that has been bothering me for some time, and I’m glad someone has taken the lead in discussing it. Hundreds have died and thousands are in great need.

I’m not even going to summarize it…just recommend that everyone go read the article. It’s time that the US start paying attention to the rest of the world, as they pay attention to us. It’ll come back to bite us sooner than many think.

Gloria jumps on the Celeb Kid Lit Conga Line

Because the Estefans apparently don’t have their hands in enough business ventures, Gloria Estefan has a children’s book hitting shelves tomorrow. The book , titled “The Magically Mysterious Adventures of Noelle the Bulldog,”, is your typical underdog (literally) saves the day story with a Latino twist, and according to Estefan is based on her own experience of struggle when she arrived to the U.S. from Cuba as a child.

So far critics aren’t falling all over themselves over the book, which seems pretty common for celeb penned kiddie lit. But I bet that the general Latino parenting community will go out and buy the book because of the sheer lack of Latino themed children’s books in English available. If you don’t believe me, go to your local chain bookstore and check it out for yourself and while you’re there check out Gloria’s latest endeavor.
