From the College Trenches: Latino Recruitment

uncle_sam11-23-2004-b.jpgNot from a huge news source, but from a college paper, come first-hand accounts of the way the Army is specifically targeting Latino and African American youth and women on college campuses, while completely ignoring white students:

"I was like, 'man, did you see those three white individuals pass by, why didn't you approach them?'" Leo asked the recruiters afterwards.

Reports have shown that the Pentagon is spending hundreds of millions of dollars to find out whatever it can about Leo and other young Latinos; what they wear, where they hang out, what kinds of groups they form, what they read, what they watch on TV, their grades, their dreams.

And why not white kids? Why not their kids?

Some students on campus have pointed out that recruiters try to persuade people into the Army by saying that their education will be paid for and that they will be able to be successful.

Acero points out that "they (army recruiters) are targeting the people that have very low self-esteem and very low income and these people feel that they are going to help their families with that money."

With all the pressures that kids have to put up with when they are in college; grades, paying tuition, work, just making it, I think it's sad they have to deal with this as well.
