Latinas Convert to Islam

islam.jpgStudies estimate that there are about 40,000 Latino Muslims in the US, and an estimated 60% are women. Many, if not the majority of these Latino Muslims are converts. There are 6 million Muslims in South America, according to HispanicMuslims.com

Converting to Islam can be difficult, sometimes even more so for family members. Muslim practices are very different to Catholicism, and if the women wear a hijab or headscarf and participate in prayer 5 times daily, the change is even more obvious.

So why have some Latina women decided to become Muslim? According to the MSNBC article, reasons vary. Some women don’t find what they are looking for in Catholicism, some have been impacted by positive community involvement, while others feel that it represents a “return to traditional values”.

From the College Trenches: Latino Recruitment

uncle_sam11-23-2004-b.jpgNot from a huge news source, but from a college paper, come first-hand accounts of the way the Army is specifically targeting Latino and African American youth and women on college campuses, while completely ignoring white students:

“I was like, ‘man, did you see those three white individuals pass by, why didn’t you approach them?’” Leo asked the recruiters afterwards.

Reports have shown that the Pentagon is spending hundreds of millions of dollars to find out whatever it can about Leo and other young Latinos; what they wear, where they hang out, what kinds of groups they form, what they read, what they watch on TV, their grades, their dreams.

And why not white kids? Why not their kids?

Some students on campus have pointed out that recruiters try to persuade people into the Army by saying that their education will be paid for and that they will be able to be successful.

Acero points out that “they (army recruiters) are targeting the people that have very low self-esteem and very low income and these people feel that they are going to help their families with that money.”

With all the pressures that kids have to put up with when they are in college; grades, paying tuition, work, just making it, I think it’s sad they have to deal with this as well.

fire.jpg New York City based Latina sculptor Teresita Fernández was awarded a MacArthur Fellows Program grant of $500,000 over the next 5 years, “no strings attached”. Teresita’s works ,which have been featured in galleries worldwide, use architecture, space, and color and invite viewers to experience her work instead of just seeing. Teresita was chosen, along with 24 other artists, because of her “creativity, originality, and potential”.
She certainly has a substantial body of work and can serve as an inspiration to other Latino visual artists.
